Each year, the City’s code compliance division handles about 23,000 cases. That’s more than 60 cases a day, on average. Most residents and businesses never see code compliance, only if City and state codes and ordinances are violated. Code Compliance is an important community benefit because staff preserve and promote public safety and welfare.

This division, comprising code enforcement officers, building inspectors and support staff, handle a variety of cases—from dealing with abandoned vehicles, junk and debris, and housing and dangerous buildings, to enforcing zoning codes and handling noise and graffiti abatement.

Get a firsthand look as Maurice Chaney takes an up and close look at two code cases in the City with code compliance staffers Belinda Rogers and Maurice Schranz.

I am a big fan of code enforcement folks, hire more. Seems like they would pay their own way?

This segment would have been even more interesting if you'd shown the result of the investigations. Other than issuing citations, what can they do?

If anyone is interested, here is an article written by our former City Politics reporter Kathleen Haley. She shadowed a Code Enforcement Officer for the day:

A bit outdated (it's from 2009) but I'm assuming most of the information is still relevant.

It was interesting being behind the camera and hearing the enforcement officers' stories. Just took a look at that article, and it seems like all was still very relevant.

Thanks for showing the importance of code enforcement, and the humanity of the officers. Their job is not pleasant, but we all owe them a debt of thanks for trying to maintain a pleasant community for all.
