Rivercats pitcher Bruce Billings took the hill for his 24th start, hoping for his 8th win of the season. He was cheered on by 13,870 fans enjoying the annual Raley Field Fiesta. But two fateful swings from a dynamic duo of Salt Lake Bees led him to his 6th loss instead. Leftfielder Ryan Langerhans and designated hitter Cory Aldridge hit back-to-back homers in the top of the 2nd inning to give Salt Lake a lead they would never give up.

Besides Langerhans’ and Aldridge’s homers, shortstop Andrew Romine added to the Salt Lake fireworks with an RBI triple in the 1st. Third baseman Luis Jimeniz followed immediately afterwards by driving in the 2nd Bees’ run with a single.

Trailing by 4-0, the Rivercats clawed back with 2 runs in the 4th and another in the 6th inning. But 17 runners left stranded on base by Sacramento and the control of 3 Salt Lake pitchers gave the Bees a 4-3 victory over the local AAA team. Salt Lake pitcher Matt Shoemaker improved his record to 10-9 with a 5.52 ERA. Second baseman Jermile Weeks doubled in two runners in the 4th, and third baseman Stephen Parker singled in the last Rivercats score in the 6th inning.

Jermile Weeks stole his first base, singling in the 2nd and 6th, doubled in the 4th, and walked in the 9th for his very productive game since being optioned to Sacramento by the Oakland A’s on August 21st. Weeks hopes to get earn his way back to the A’s where the young switch-hitter starred at 2nd base batting a solid .303.

With this loss, the magic number remains at 5 (combination of Sacramento wins and Las Vegas losses) for the Rivercats to clinch their 11th Pacific Coast League, Southern Division title.
