A photographer takes photos of the diseased camphor tree at Capitol and 18th as workers cut off limbs. (Image by: Kati Garner)

Over 100 years old, the camphor tree at the corner of Capitol and 18th has won the hearts of many Sacramentans.  Sadly it has  contracted a fungal disease known as verticillium wilt.

And so it must come down.

I caught some shots as workers were taking it apart, limb by limb. Sad to see a big beautiful tree have to come down:

A love letter. (Image by: Kati Garner) Worker in the bucket uses chain saw to cut limbs and they are hauled away from the tree. Anyone know if use will be made of the stump? Maybe a bench or something would be cool :)

Out in Missouri, where I live, in Todd Akin territory, people just cut down trees all the time without a thought. Of course the trees are mostly dogwood, shrubs or twigs.

And in Asia i saw many old magnificent trees like this with ribbons tied around it -showing their reverence. It looks so bare now. The tree really helped to define the space. I hope that it's replacement will not be one of Sac Tree Foundation's scrawny sticks. When I had a business down the street I planted two good sized trees. They cost about 200 each but was well worth it.
