It goes without saying, that The California Museum is a museum with a mission. The mission here is to educate and enlighten visitors about all things Californian. Established in 1998
1986
as the Golden State Museum, this institution has seen several transformations, the most dramatic being it’s reinvention as The California Museum of History, Women, and the Arts.
Now simply known as The California Museum, this downtown Sacramento institution faces several challenges. Visitors, as well as long-time Sacramento residents, are often unaware of the Museum existence.

Shelly Heyes, Education & Programs Manager of the Museum, led an introductory training Friday morning for prospective volunteers. The dozen attendees brought a wide range of ages and experiences. Some were first-time volunteers, while others had given their time to causes such as the Sacramento Food Bank, Crocker Art Museum, and even the Louvre. Though their personal experiences varied, the enthusiasm level of the new volunteer recruits was obvious.

Heyes noted, “Volunteers are precious to us!” as she took the attendees though some of the opportunities available. Tour Docents, Program Presenters, Arts & History Learning Advisors, and Family Program were areas where volunteers could help the Education Department. She then went over several benefits of being a volunteer, including Museum discounts, opportunities to attend special events, and free admission for the volunteer and a guest.
The attendees included May, who volunteered at Open Doors, Nick, a helper at the Sacramento Food Bank, and Sabrina, who’s served at the Louvre. According to Heyes, the interests and experiences of the new volunteers would be invaluable to continue the Museum’s work.

“Volunteering is a lot of work.” According to Heyes. “But our volunteers reap benefits, as well” She noted how community volunteers are rewarded by meeting new people, sharing their passion, and getting the message out. She also felt that just getting the attendees to come to the training would help to get the word out even more, as they shared their experiences here.
