In a few minutes, I'll be conducting a video interview with Kerri Asbury, Chair of the Democratic Party of Sacramento, about the recent back-and-forth between her and Mayor Kevin Johnson about how nonprofits like Think Big use city space.

We'll have Steve Maviglio, the mayor's former campaign manager, in on the chat as well.

[Update: The chat is now over. We'll have the first artilce up by tomorrow.]

Sacramentopress.com and other local online media deserve praise for focusing on the issue, which is a transparent inquiry. Without full disclosure yet, it's premature to judge.

For those who ask about why the local Democratic party gets involved in local races, this is a great video on the structure of the California Democratic Party: http://www.sacdems.org/about-us/dem-party-structure/. See at about 8:29, discussing how local central committees get people involved and are responsible for local races.

I haven't seen Maviglio calling out the Assembly Speaker for taking sides and providing money in Dem v Dem candidates running in safe Democratic Assembly seats. Steve is typical of so-called Democrats who insist that elected Dem officials are owed unwavering fealty by party members. In this County, most active Democrats feel that elected Democrats should be held accountable by voters and party activists. Any registered Democrat can get active in the County Party as well as the various Democratic Clubs. I support Keri.

That's because the Speaker is doing what a Speaker's job is: to protect his Caucus. On the other hand, the County Democrats -- elected by County Democrats -- should do what their charter says to do: unite Democrats instead of divide them. Ms. Asbury's actions have nothing to do with her responsibilities as County chair. She is welcome to do them on her own, or on behalf of the union she represents. But sending a letter without a vote or approval of a Board that attacks another Democrat? By the organization's own bylaws it's wrong.

Any leader who truly believed in accountability would welcome any question concerning those who may influence policy or how taxpayer funds are expended. It gives me great concern that Mr. Maviglio and the mayor think the appropriate course of action would be to attack Ms. Asbury for simply asking a legitimate question. I applaud Ms. Asbury for her courage. Bravo!

Clearly, "Omega," you didnt listen to a word I said. I have no problems with these questions being made. My problem is with the Chair of the Sacramento County Democrats, instead of trying to elect Democrats, using her position -- without the consent of her own Board -- to go after a Democratic mayor. My point is that energy be directed into working for President Obama, against Prop 32, and electing Democrats to partisan offices.

Well we can put to rest the notion that this has anything to do with "transparency" or "open government". By Miss Asbury's own account her witchhunt is focused only on the NPOs associated with the Mayor and ignores the Councilmemeber's NPOs. It's bizarre that the local Democratic Party is trying to thwart efforts to promote Green Energy, find long term solutions to ending homelessness, and diversify the local economy by kickstarting arts and infill development programs.
But given the local party's dismal record of doing nothing while Fargo was pay ing over farmland for more sprawl development and bankrupting our economy nothing coming out of the DPSC surprises me anymore.

If I believed for one minute this was honestly about transparency I would be okay with it, but it isn't. This is about an ongoing beef with the mayor. Like it or not Mayor Johnson was re-elected. How about working with him to make changes vs. working against him? I am not a big fan of some of the things KJ does or how he goes about things sometimes. I am a fan of all of us working together with the overall greater good at the forefront. One does not have to be "buddies" with someone but if you are going to engage in government and the process you should be prepared to work with everyone to accomplish your goals.

It is sad that the people of Sacramento thought Johnson was still the best option for Mayor. When I met with him over concerns for the school district and special education concerns he just blew smoke up my rear just like a politician who only cares about their own interests, instead of what is the best for the community they swore to represent! Lied to me and my son while sitting across from him. Perhaps off topic but I cringe when I hear his name, now..

Maviglio calls the Demos of Sacramento for jamming up KJ, but Maviglio (synonym for hypocrite) talks smack about Sen. Rod Wright, also a Dem.
