"We're not terrorists, we're photographers!"

The headline describes the last part of a fun photo shoot.

Early last night, my friend Ed Fogle and I took a photographic tour of the Capitol Mall, just shooting whatever caught our eyeballs.

We strolled along, sharing photo tips and ideas as we took photos. We timed it so we would catch the beginning of sunset on our trek headed west.

At the end of our fun evening as we were shooting a building, a security guard came out to tell us we can't shoot that building.

He basically called us terrorists - patriotic Ed and US Navy Veteran Kati. Ed diplomatically explained photographer's rights after a verbal go-around with the young security guard. He even admitted he was bored, so we became 'something to do'.

It ended well.

Here's some of my shots. At the bottom is a link to a Google album of Ed's photos:  Image by: Kati Garner Image by: Kati Garner Image by: Kati Garner Two photos above looking at K and J Streets from Captiol Mall (Image by: Kati Garner) Bank of the West reflected in US Bank tower. Kati, I love the photos! I went out several months ago after dark and shot some of the same buildings. In fact, the interior of the US Bank was translated from photo to ink and pastel in a piece that I did. So glad you and Ed stood your ground. Photographers go out at all times of the day, sometimes sitting for hours waiting for the right light. You captured some great light on those buildings. Thanks for sharing the photos and the tale.

I won't spoil it because Kati will be bringing part 2 of this in a couple of days, but we got harassed again by another young, over-zealous security guard on another photog venture down J street Friday. I feel sorry for our tourists who don't know their photographing rights and get razed by these youngsters.

Great photos, Kati!

And thanks for standing up for photographers' rights. I wonder who was guarding the inside of the building while the security guard was "protecting it" from being photographed.

I did some digging and talked with some more professional security agents over the weekend. I discovered that depending on what is in the building they are guarding (ie., bank, fed) they are to inquire and report or log depending on their conversation with the photographer. They are not trained to stop the photographer from photographing and should not and can not order the photographer to stop.... is my understanding.

We're having a great time on these shoots. We're considering taking some aspiring photogs along with us for future shoots; kind of a breakfast and shoot w/ the photogs gig. If that's something you would be interested in, let us know. Email us at info@maverickphotography.us and put "Breakfast with photogs" in the subject line. We'll connect with you and let you know when our next shoot will be.
