An arsonist apparently struck McKinley park Saturday, destroying roughly a third of the playground with an early morning blaze.

This video shows the damaged area:

Sac City Fire Battalion Chief Jonathan William told Sacmav.com that someone had set the fire, and that the playground's wooden structure was "fully involved" by the time fire crews arrived. The fire then spread quickly through the plastic and dry wood, he said.

Williams said that the arsonist had ruined the playground for children who would have used it that morning, and destroyed public property.

"All people are doing is destroying city property and the city is going to end up rebuilding it and spending more money where they don't have money to spend," he said.

Councilmember Angelique Ashby reacted to the fire after learning about it through the Facebook page of RanSACkedmedia.com.

"What a sad event for all of the families who enjoy that beautiful park, senseless and disappointing," she wrote, "but we will find a way to replace it - somehow."

Matt Cannaedy lives three blocks away from the park and brings his toddler-aged daughter to the playground five to six times a week. He was there with his daughter Saturday morning, surveying the damage.

"I think this is horrible," he said. "Honestly, I can't understand arson in the first place, but why a children's playground? Why would you do this to the kids? They are innocent. Honestly, I'm speechless on this whole situation. It's really sad."

Latahra Kennedy brings her preschool-aged daughter to the park on a regular basis. She values it for its diversity.

"It has all kinds of nationalities and it's just a wonderful park," she said. "For you to take this away from them, it's hard to find a good playground that you trust."

She had come to the playground on Saturday to let her daughter play and was sadden by what she saw.

"For your children to see the park like that, it's devastating," she said.

I suppose I'm more angry than sad, but it's hard to separate the two...

I'm utterly speechless. That playground provided untold hours of fun for me and my children over the years. To see this senseless destruction for destruction sake is painful. I just want to cry.

As a response East Sac Give Back is asking the community to rally. Although we can not yet offer you a tax deduction, we can solicit funds explicitly set aside to help rebuild this for the children's sake. Simply follow the link below and in your comment section write "We will rebuild"! To read more about our organization type East Sac Give Back into the SP search bar. We are also on Facebook Thanks!

As the president of East Sac Give Back I am pledging to cover the 5% fee that the donation transaction costs. One thing that sets East Sac Give Back appart from the others is that we are NOT just focused on East Sacramento. Read about our Mission on www.eastsacgiveback.org. Thank you.

Here's a couple of thoughts:

1) Depending upon the c3 non profit status of McKinley Elvas NA, East Sac Preservation & East Sacramento Improvement Association, which if any or all may already be operating as such, may already have a framework for setting up a special rebuild fund.

In addition to that is the Gift to Share program operated through the city.

http://www.giftstoshare.org/about.htm

The most currenht report on theri site is ~5years old....but they already have a track record for serving the community.

Why doesn't East Sac Give Back simply funnel donations through the C3 that city parks already uses (the Gifts to Share program, referenced above) - that's an easy way to handle donations, and you don't need to pay the 5% commission that East Sac Give Back's provider is charging. That will save a lot of money in the long run.

Has any police agency ever profiled the person who burns these wooden playgrounds? They seem to be a favorite target, catch fire easily, cause great heartache to little ones, invoke extreme outrage from parents, spark fundraising and rebuilding efforts, only to repeat the cycle again. I suspect part of the profile is "bragging" -- someone knows this person. We need to develop a better understanding of who is attracted to this particular type of vandalism.

I've updated my directory listing here:

http://kidsbusybook.com/city/ca-sacramento/sports-parks/mckinley-park/

At least I got some great photos of it before it was destroyed. That was one of our favorite playgrounds in the entire region.

" "All people are doing is destroying city property and the city is going to end up rebelling it and spending more money where they don't have money to spend," he said."

And these days they may be "rebelling it" when there isn't money to rebuild.

Believe me the community will chip in to rebuild this playground. One good thing that will come out of this is that McKinley Park will get a new playground. To be honest it was not up to modern standards. I was just there a few weeks ago and was surprised by how deteriorated it was. It seemed a little unsafe. A kid got hurt while I was there and I got a splinters. I hope they look at the new Dolores Park playground in San Francisco for an example of how they should rebuild.

Mark - that wasn't directed at you. It just made me wonder if anybody has ever claimed to have done something like this in order to cause the new facility to be built.

Tony I wasn't offended. I thought it was funny. But I doubt the person(s) who did this care very much about re-creation. It seems like they are more into destruction for the destruction sake. But who knows? It would a nice surprise if they actually caught the perpetrator.

Hi Michael, I went to your page to look into donating because I too loved that structure. My concern--and I think it is a valid one--is that it says that all money will go to you directly (with an email address). I'm assuming this is because you're waiting for non-profit incorporation. But do you have a board? Committee? What kind of controls and oversight? I know this may not seem like the time for such questions with folks so anxious to get a rebuilding effort underway, but actually it seems particularly important under these circumstances. Can you tell us more, please. Thank you.

Hi Lori, Thank you for your questions, which are definitely important.

I would like to direct you to our Facebook GROUP which has a Files section near the top with all corporate information, and a newsletter which includes information regarding your questions. East Sac Give Back is a completely legitimate corporation at this point. Our bylaws are being reviewed by two of Sacramento's top lawyers who are well versed in nonprofit legalities.

As soon as we get the green light from them (which should be VERY soon) we can formally introduce our Board (which will provide oversight) and apply for tax exempt status. Our corporate ID number is C3473552. Our Federal Employer Identification Number: 45-5215122

Our Facebook Group can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/eastsacgiveback/

Also, if you type East Sac Give Back into the SacPress search bar you can read more details.
We have raised close to $1,500 as of this writing, which is pretty incredible being that we are in the formative stage!

Fort Natomas, another community-built playground burned twice, the second time just after the rebuild. McKinley will rebuild. If we don't rebuild, and rebuild quickly, our communities lose. And, as Michael notes, donations and sponsors are stepping up.

In addition to lots of donations, we'll eventually need a few local landscape architects to volunteer really awesome plans for a new playground that is just as interesting, challenging & unique as the old one!
