Mayor Kevin Johnson and Think Big Sacramento leaders held a press conference Monday morning to announce a new effort for the future of the downtown railyards: the possibility of building a baseball stadium and bringing a Major League Baseball franchise to the city.

The press conference was streamed live.

It's deja vu all over again.

Sacramento has nowhere near the population required to support a MLB team.

I wish this was a joke. The mayor should explain why he wants to chuck the plans that the City and residents have spent a lot of time, energy and money developing. I don't understand how these 'Think Big' clowns can come in and completely change the direction/focus of the Railyards. They think they have found a way to wring money out of the publicly-financed parking garages and now are looking for ways to spend that money in order to line their own pockets. I would like to know who the 72 members of Think Big are.

"The population of Denver was 600,158 according to the 2010 census which ranks it as the 27th most populous U.S. city."
"With a population of 470,956 at the 2012 Dept. of Finance Report, and with an estimated population of 2,527,123, the Sacramento metropolitan area is the 22nd largest in the United States."
-Source: Wikipedia
Denver has somehow managed to support four major league teams: Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanch and Rockies. I think Sacramento could support a major league baseball team...especially one that's already been established. An outdoor ballpark would look a LOT better than an arena in the railyards - and could also support some other activities in the off-season, i.e., concerts. I think it would be petty cool.

You also have to take into perspective that all those teams are also supported by the entire state of Colorado. If you live in Colorado there is only one local baseball or basketball or football team to root for. In California there are many options.

Well, at least the eastern half of Colorado - which is where the majority of the population lives. Not too many people make the drive from Grand Junction, or Colorado Springs or Pueblo to attend an event in Denver. But your point is well-taken, nevertheless, Jim. I'm a little biased, though! I LOVE baseball - couldn't care less about hoops!

Jim is exactly right. You can't just compare population.

Teams in Denver also receive support from fans in Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska and both South and North Dakota. No one from the Bay Area would drive to Sacramento to support a baseball team, they would all become even bigger Giants fans. That's why the A's owners have already shot this idea down and its not like Northern California is going to attract a third MLB team.

SO - let's assume for a moment that no sports venue is at hand for Sacramento. What now? I hope this isn't our only option. Time to start thinking about some reasonable alternatives, eh?

If they couldn't *keep* the Kings, how will they attract an even more prominent sport? This is clutching at straws......

No big private business in the area = no arena.
We should be trying to attract big brand names here first. Power Balance arena. Lol!

How about NASCAR? We'd definitely fill a NASCAR stadium once a year.

Sure, we could put it on top of that blighted golf course near the zoo!

Ask Roseville if their racetrack brings in any money. Drive down Washington Blvd. on a Saturday night and you'll see those stadium seats PACKED!
