Rio Linda Library presents free summer programs

The Sacramento Public Library has many fun, exciting, and free Summer Reading programs at its Rio Linda branch whose programs are temporarily being held in The Depot building, 6730 Front Street, Rio Linda. Upcoming special programs include:
Thursday, July 5, 3:30 p.m.: Learn About Insects with the Bohart Museum of Entomology. See and learn about all kinds of beautiful, interesting, and useful bugs. There will be lots of bugs to see, and you might even get to pet a live walking stick or cockroach!
Thursday, July 12, 3:30 p.m.: Dream Catching: Story and Craft with ArtBeast. Children will hear the powerful story Grandmother’s Dreamcatcher, about a Chippewa child who learns from her grandmother how to capture good dreams and keep the bad ones away. After the story, children will use beads, yarn, feathers, twine, and spangles to create their own dream catchers to take home.
Thursday, July 19, 3:30 p.m.: Dream Big with juggler Owen Baker-Flynn. Owen Baker-Flynn will entertain, amaze, and crack you up with his awesome and hilarious juggling skills.
Wednesday, July 25, 3:30 p.m.: Retro Crafts: Macramé and Shrinky Dinks. Teens and adults will get in some groovy crafting action with macrame, Shrinky Dinks, and decoupage.
Thursday, July 26, 3:30 p.m.: Dream Trees: Story and Craft with ArtBeast. The session opens with a reading of The Dream Tree, the story of a young caterpillar curious about life and his mother who encourages him to patiently wait for the mysteries of growing up. After the story, children will create caterpillars, wings, and dream trees from a buffet of art supplies that includes wool rovings, yarn, googly eyes, poms, fabric, pipe cleaners, sticks, and other treasures.

Central Library presents free summer programs

The Sacramento Public Library has many fun, exciting, and free Summer Reading programs at its Central Library, 828 I Street, Sacramento. Upcoming special programs include:
Saturday, July 7 at 1 p.m.: Beginning Genealogy: Using Records to Tell Your Ancestors’ Stories. Learn how to extract information from birth, census, marriage, death, and other records to document and record the stories of your ancestors. Then combine the information from the various records to reconstruct their life stories.
Sunday, July 22 at 3 p.m. Comedy Magic with Penney the Clown. Enjoy the antics and magic of Penney the Clown.
Saturday, July 28 at 3 p.m.: Harmony Henna with Babita Amar. Since ancient times, the art of henna has adorned bodies for ceremonies and celebrations. Experience the look of tattoos without the discomfort. Henna is a temporary and safe expression of your joy and individuality.
Sunday, July 29 at 3 p.m.: Instruments of the World with Catherine Mandella. Watch and learn about instruments from all over the globe.

Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library presents free summer programs

The Sacramento Public Library has many fun, exciting, and free Summer Reading programs at its Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven branch, 7335 Gloria Drive, Sacramento. Upcoming special programs include:
Saturday, July 7 at 1 p.m.: Adult Book Discussion Group. Read and discuss the books, Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston, and When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka.
Wednesday, July 11 at 6:30 p.m.: I Street: The Legal Side of Self Publishing. Struggling to decide between publishing options? Unsure whether your work fits best in traditional markets, self-publishing, e-publishing, or something completely different? Explore the options and learn how to make these important career decisions with publishing lawyer and author Susan Spann. Spann is a practicing California attorney with over ten years of experience in intellectual property, publishing and contract law. Her publishing clients include book and magazine publishers, independent and agented authors (traditional and self-published), and developers of e-books and digital apps.
Wednesday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m.: Making the Transition to College. The transition from high school to college can be a difficult one for both parents and students. Get tips on how to make the adjustment to college from certified college counselor Marilyn Van Loben-Sels. Find out how college is different than high school (it isn't what you think), learn what campus services to look for and what activities to take advantage of including internships and study abroad. You will also get tips on how to live independently, manage your money and time and how to get along with roommates. Most importantly, find out what you should pack! Saturday, July 21 at 2 p.m.: Magic Show with Jonathan Lopez. Join us for a family-friendly afternoon filled with magic and laughter.
Tuesday, June 24 at 2 p.m. .: Hawaiian Dances with the Ohana Dance Group. The Ohana Dance Group returns to show us more traditional hula dance moves. The dance group is a multi-generational “hula halau” where students of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities are exposed to the Hawaiian culture and music through traditional hula.

McKinley Library presents free summer programs

The Sacramento Public Library has many fun, exciting, and free Summer Reading programs at its McKinley branch, 601 Alhambra Boulevard, Sacramento. Upcoming special programs include:
Saturday, July 7 at 1 p.m.: Repurposed Library with ArtWorks. The adult program is a collection of do-it-yourself projects that use every imaginable part of a book, from hardcover back to individual pages, to create new art objects and practical items for the home. Learn how “orphaned” books can become home décor accessories, such as wreathes and vases, shelves, storage, boxes and even clocks.
Thursday, July 12 at 3 p.m.: Make a Wish: Wish Traditions Around the World. School-age children can make Indian peacock feather bookmarks, learn the Chinese custom of tying a wish to an “orange” and toss it in a tree, and make a Thai lotus boat to bring good luck and make wishes come true.
Thursday, July 19 at 3 p.m.: Star-Making Crafts. School-age children can make stars from a variety of materials, including felt, paper, and beads.
Thursday, July 26 at 3 p.m.: Reading Pillows Sewing Craft. Teens and adults can learn to sew additions such as ribbons and pockets to a pillow case to make it a convenient holder for books and pens.
Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.: Pajama Storytime. The entire family is invited to wear their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed friend to McKinley Library for evening storytimes. The program, ideal for youngsters, ages 1 to 5 years, includes gentle stories and songs to lull little ones into a peaceful slumber.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Library presents free summer programs

The Sacramento Public Library has many fun, exciting, and free Summer Reading programs at its Martin Luther King, Jr. branch, 7340 24th Street Bypass, Sacramento. Upcoming special programs include:
Tuesday, July 10 at 4 p.m.: The Frog Prince with the Fratello Marionettes. Children will be delighted to see a marionette puppet show of the classic fairytale of the spoiled Princess Ofelia on the day of her birthday celebration.
Tuesday, July 24 at 4 p.m.: Night Time Dreams with Mad Science. Have you ever dreamed you were flying? Everyone is welcome to join Mad Science for activities and stories.
Tuesday, July 31 at 4 p.m.: Spitball Warfare. Library staff will show children who to create catapults, trebuchets, and slingshots; plus, learn a little about the science of projectile hurling and get in some target practice. Kids will be able to make their own live action version of Angry Birds.

Rancho Cordova Library presents free summer programs

The Sacramento Public Library has many fun, exciting, and free Summer Reading programs at its Rancho Cordova branch, 9845 Folsom Boulevard, Sacramento. Upcoming special programs include:
Thursday, July 5 at 2 p.m.: Night Sky for Kids. Children will learn about the night sky and create their own constellation.
Saturday, July 7 at 10 a.m.: Coffee, Tea and Conversation for Seniors. Adults, age 55 and older, are encouraged to share their favorite books and memories. Light refreshments will be served.
Saturday, July 7 at 2 p.m.: Author Judith Horstman will discuss her newest book, The Scientific American Healthy Aging Brain: The Neuroscience of Making the Most of Your Mature Mind. There has never been a better time in all of history to grow old. But will your brain age as well as the rest of you? In her fourth book exploring the brain, Horstman presents a realistic, encouraging overview of the well-aged brain, a sobering look at what can go wrong, and the latest in what neuroscience is finding might help you––and your brain––stay healthy longer. Culled from current research, the book explains how your brain grows and the changes to expect in a healthy aging brain.
Tuesday, July 10 at 6 p.m.: Maximize Your Social Security. The program will help seniors find the best time to start taking social security, and a representative from a firm versed in financial strategies will be available to answer questions.
Thursday, July 19 at 2 p.m.: Big Dreams, Little Dreamer with Izzie Tooinsky. Popular storyteller Izzi Tooinsky will enchant children with the tale of a little juggler who has big dreams of dragons, spirits, wizards, fools, freedom, happiness and fun.

North Natomas Library presents free summer programs

The Sacramento Public Library has many fun, exciting, and free Summer Reading programs at its North Natomas branch, 4660 Via Ingoglia, Sacramento. Upcoming special programs include:
Thursday, July 5 at 7 p.m.: Knitting and Crochet Circle. It’s never too hot to knit! Adults, of all skill levels, are asked to bring their projects, yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks.
Wednesdays, July 11, 18 and 25 at 10 a.m.: Toddler Story Time. Join us for songs, rhymes, stories and movement activities for children approximately 18 months to 3 years old along with a caregiver.
Wednesdays, July 11, 18 and 25 at 11 a.m.: Preschool Story Time. Preschoolers, age 3 to 5 years, and their caregivers are invited to join us for songs, rhymes, stories and finger play activities designed to build early literacy skills. On the last Wednesday of each month, join Senora Maria for Spanish story time.
Saturdays, July 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 4 p.m.: International Poetry Tour: Teens and adults are invited to a series of multicultural poetry readings, presented by the Sacramento Poetry Center.
Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m.: Friends of the North Natomas Library Meeting. Join this dynamic volunteer group and find out how to help the community library.
Tuesday, July 17 at 4 p.m.: Dream Catchers. According to Native American legend, when hung above a bed, bad dreams will get tangled in the web of the dream catcher, allowing only good dreams to pass through the center to the dreamer. Participants will create dream catchers from cord, beads and feathers.
Saturday, July 21 at 2 p.m.: Animals from around the World with Wild Things. Kids can meet animal ambassadors from five continents and hear their personal stories. Enjoy learning about these animals and others that inhabit the corners of the Earth.
