A new central city hop-on/hop-off bus route begins June 22, and it aims to provide a low-cost shuttle service between restaurants and bars on the weekends, according to owner Laura Allen.

Called the Lil' Hopper, the 27-seat bus will make 30-minute loops throughout downtown and Midtown. It will likely start at 7:15 p.m. and end at 1 a.m.

The scheduled route will begin at 12th and J streets and make stops along J, K and L streets and Capitol Avenue on its loop. Stops include 15th and J, 18th and J, 23rd and J, 24th and K, and 18th and Capitol Avenue.

The Lil' Hopper will run Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets are $10 for the night, and they can be purchased from the bus driver.

“People have asked for the new route,” Allen said. “Some people get on downtown, and they don’t want to ride back to Sac State before going to the next stop. This is more of a bus for people who want to hop between different locations on the grid.”

The bus comes from Allen Transportation, the same company that launched the Sactown Hopper in March. The Sactown Hopper transports riders between stops in the central city and the area around the Sacramento State campus, and is also expanding its operation to run Wednesday through Saturday beginning next week. A single ticket allows unlimited rides on both buses.

“We’re trying to keep people safe, let them have fun and make sure they don’t drink and drive,” Allen said.

Lil' Hopper - What a cute lil' name. No love for 21st and P though? You've got Press Club, Townhouse, Old Tavern, Benny's, and Alley Katz in that area. Drunk biking up 21st street isn't safe! Bring Lil' Hopper to P street!

An excellent idea--and while running until 1 AM is nice, running for another hour would let those who want to stay until "last call" make the last run home. And will they have provision to track the next bus online or via smartphone, like the new RT "Next Bus" application?

We will see what we can do with the route. The schedule we have now takes 30 minutes to loop and that was what our goal was for this service.

That's understandable. Perhaps if things turn out well, you could consider adding a second bus with it's own route? A route that would head into Old Sacramento's night scene. I was browsing Yelp's Old Sac listings this morning, and was quite surprised that Old Sac had quite a few bars and clubs. I have never considered Old Sac as a destination to spend my night, mainly because of its distance from everything else, but I think if there was a bus that dipped into Old Sac, I would gladly ride it down and check things out. I'm sure the Old Sacramento businesses would definitely appreciate this kind of service, since they'll get more business from the newcomers.

Disco ball included? Absolutely fantastic idea and tailor-made for The Grid! An extra hour or two on it would definitely benefit the "last call" crowd...wish I could say it would cut down on drunk drivers, but unfortunately, a 2:00am walk home in Midtown will definitely tell you that the glug-glug-vroom-vrooms are all heading OUT of The Grid

Considering the rate of "deweys" in this town, I sincerely doubt they're bored at 2am on a Saturday night

It may not be helpful for the glug-glug-vroom-vrooms, but it may be helpful to people who live in the central city but want to get to a venue that is a bit out of easy walking distance but too short to justify driving or a cab ride. It also means those who aren't driving have an option besides dodging the glug-glug-vroom-vrooms, trying to avoid becoming roadkill on the walk home. Or, just being able to get there in more stylish but less comfortable footwear!

I realize the idea was originally to bring people to the central city from outside, then move them around within it, but it seems like it would be even more useful to residents who like to go out late and could use a lift!

I hope the Hopper is super successful. If the Hopper stops at central city / Midtown garages like the East End / Sutter Community Garage, etc. it might ease a little parking pressure in nearby neighborhoods if people know they can hop a shuttle from where they parked their car (for those who aren't from the central city). It's a win - win residents and late night businesses. Also agree that the P Street (18th to 21st) is a prime area as it is saturated with bars.

Is the $10 all night pass the only option?

Yes, it is. For $10 you get unlimited on/off privileges all night. You can also get on our original Hopper with the same wristband.

Very smart. The drinking version of safe sex. I like it.

This sensible solution will not do. Quick--somebody spend billions of dollars putting in a trolley system that will be much less effective and much more costly.

A bus full of drunks, loud, obnoxious drunks. Can't wait to see this play out.

This really needs to go down 10th to R street where Fox & Goose, Elixir, Ironsides are located. Then move down R street to Shady Lady, Burgers N Brew, Ace of Spades, R15 before heading back up 16th. It seems like an obvious choice to work R street into this service.

Agreed, brick....first step toward establishing the R Street Corridor as a destination...maybe make some people jump off there that weren't anticipating to go there

Our original Hopper service does stop at 15th and R. The wristband will get you on both buses.

I think this is a great idea and long overdue.

While it definitely won't end drunk driving and the schedule probably has some kinks to work out, I think we should all give them kudos for trying this out.

Although they're going to need to get a razor blade and go to work on the "Lounge on 20" stop printed on the window!

So it sounds like there are two buses that you can utilize for the single nightly fee. Does anyone know if there is there an easy way to view route and schedule information across both lines?

We will be posting our Lil Hopper schedule shortly. You can use your wristband for both buses ($10 all night for unlimited rides from 7:15pm - 2am)

Way to step it up til 2:00 AM, that extra hour makes all the difference. Lounge on 20 is gonzo? Please tell me that it's being replaced by another Ultra-lounge. Or a second Spaghetti Factory. You can never have too many.
