The numbers are staggering: 1 out of every 88 children in America has autism. Statistics show, it is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. Autism: Emerging from the Maze, a new documentary produced by KVIE Public Television examines the daily journeys of local families as they seek to understand autism and explores the latest research and services. In the documentary, insights on early behavioral markers for autism from experts at the UC Davis MIND Institute; STAND, Sutter Transition for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, a clinic helping adults living with autism; and services provided by the Alta California Regional Center are explored. Amanda, a 22-year-old woman living with autism, is profiled through her work as a member of A Touch of Understanding—a group that connects with thousands of students every year to help others understand what it’s like to live with disabilities.

The 30-minute program, scheduled to debut on KVIE-TV (channel 6) on Wednesday, June 13 at 7pm, features powerful stories from family members and those living with autism, including from national broadcast personality Sarah Gardner and her husband Chuck, and Rick Rollens, parents of children with autism who launched the MIND Institute, a collaborative center for finding the causes of and new treatments for autism. MIND Institute Researcher David Amaral discusses where that search has led. “What really is becoming clear is that children who have autism may have a genetic risk, but they also have to interact with something in the environment,” Amaral says in the documentary.

Also in the documentary, MIND Institute Director Leonard Abbeduto addresses the remarkable increase in the prevalence of autism diagnoses; Professor Sally Ozonoff shares insights on early behavioral markers for autism; and Professor Sally Rogers and research scientist Laurie Vismara demonstrate behavioral interventions that can reduce the disability associated with autism.

“I'm so moved by the personal stories we've discovered on this journey, and I'm honored to share them in an effort to build greater understanding,” said producer Kelly Peterson.

Co-producer Rob Stewart added, “I'm the uncle of a child with autism. I salute the pioneers of research and the network of caring that together, are changing the face of autism.”

After its debut on June 13, the documentary will also air on KVIE (channel 6) June 14 at 11:30pm, June 15 at 4pm, and June 17 at 6pm, and can be viewed online at any time on KVIE’s website.

In addition to the program, KVIE has created a webpage of local, PBS, and national autism resources, downloadable education materials, additional research resources, and video including the full Autism: Emerging from the Maze program and video extras at, kvie.org/autism.

Autism: Emerging from the Maze was made possible by funding from AT&T and SAFE Credit Union, both supporters in KVIE’s ViewFinder documentary series.

This program was created as part of KVIE’s Focus on Health initiative, with major support from UC Davis Health System. KVIE’s Focus on Health initiative also includes online videos about mental sharpness, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, depression, obesity, and other topics of importance and concern to the community at kvie.org/focusonhealth.

The numbers are staggering. The knowledge on the causes and treatments ... are indeed a 'maze'. I have a son with the diagnosis and will be sure to mark my calendar to learn more Wednesday, June 13 at 7pm. Thank you, in advance, KVIE-TV (channel 6) and all those involved in continuing to keep this mystery in focus.

The autism numbers have been climbing for the last two decades and no one in mainstream medicine can tell us why. Millions of dollars have been spent in dead-end genetic research with no conclusive results. It's taken years for experts to acknowledge that the environment plays a major role in why a child develops autism. Still, no one can point to anything as a significant trigger. The only thing officials seem to know for sure is that their ever-expanding vaccine schedule isn't the cause and they have lots of pharma-funded studies to prove it.

The truth is, while mainstream medicine continues to claim the all the science is in on vaccines and there is no link to autism, top experts candidly admit that for some children, their vaccinations caused them to become autistic. The real outrage should be over the fact that the members of the media fail to cover this issue.

Dr. Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer for Autism Speak, the country's largest autism advocacy organization, Dr. Walter Zahorodny, the head of the CDC's autism rate study in New Jersey, and Dr. David Amaral (MENTIONED IN THIS ARTICLE) are three such experts who've made public statements linking vaccines to autism.

See my story, Autism and What the Experts are Saying, Part Two: Dawson, Zahorodny, and Amaral, http://www.ageofautism.com/2012/06/autism-and-what-the-experts-are-saying-part-two-.html

In 2002 HDNet TV exposed the fact that while health officials continue to tell us studies show no link, the federal government has paid out millions of dollars for compensation for vaccine injuries that included autism?
Seeing these children who were born healthy and were suddenly and dramatically affected by their vaccinations should give us all pause. http://www.ebcala.org/news/video

Medical experts at Health and Human Services conceded the vaccine damage case of Hannah Poling? She's the young Georgia girl who regressed into autism following routine vaccinations. CBS News ran the story: Family to Receive $1.5M+ in First-Ever Vaccine-Autism Court Award. Are we to believe that vaccines have nothing to do with autism--except if you're Hannah Poling?

Why should we believe that an ever-expanding, untested, one-size-fits all vaccine schedule is fine for every child? http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/downloads/child/0-6yrs-schedule-pr.pdf
Where is the study comparing fully-vaccinated and never-vaccinated children to see if never-vaccinated kids also have a one percent autism rate? THERE ISN'T ONE.

Where is even ONE STUDY that disproves a link between vaccines and autism that isn't connected to the vaccine industry. THERE ISN'T ONE.

Those who deny that injecting more and more toxins into babies and small children is harming them are like those who deny they more and more pollution is affecting our climate. Where is the science showing that it's safe to inject three live viruses into children at one time? THERE ISN'T ANY.

Where are the studies that show that adding aluminum and mercury to vaccines is safe? THERE AREN'T ANY.

Where is the study looking at the children who were born healthy and developing normally but suddenly and dramatically lost learned skills and regressed into autism? THERE ISN'T ONE. Thousands of parents report that their kids were healthy until they received certain routine vaccinations. No one wants to looks at these children.

Where is even one study on the cumulative effect of the increasing number of vaccines in the childhood schedule? THERE ISN'T ONE.

Autism deserves much more attention than it currently receives. Hopefully this well produced piece will enlarge the discussion and action. Thanks KVIE and producer Kelly Peterson.
