The Kaiser Permanente Women’s Fitness Festival – the largest celebration of women’s health in the region – takes place Sunday morning outside the State Capitol in downtown Sacramento.

The festival begins at 8 a.m. with a 5k run/walk that puts some 4,100 women on a scenic course through downtown and Midtown and past iconic landmarks such as Sutter’s Fort. Following the run/walk, participants will enjoy a comprehensive Health Expo that includes the Thrive Pavilion, where dozens of Kaiser Permanente physicians and employees will offer information and tips about health education, sports medicine, breast cancer, and screenings for blood pressure and body composition, among other services – all for free.

The Expo also will feature a Recovery Zone, where race organizer Fleet Feet Sports and more than a dozen local vendors will offer products and services related to exercise, nutrition, recreation and healthy living.

WEAVE, the primary provider of crisis intervention services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Sacramento County, will have a booth with information about domestic violence. WEAVE also is a beneficiary of the festival, receiving donations through sponsorships and participants.

“The Kaiser Permanente Women’s Fitness Festival provides a fantastic opportunity for more than 4,000 women to celebrate health by exercising together and learning valuable medical information from many experts gathered in a single location,” said Dr. Jeanne Conry, OBGYN, an assistant physician in chief of Kaiser Permanente, the title sponsor of the event. “In this day and age, as many of us are busy balancing careers with home responsibilities, it becomes critical that we set aside time to stay fit and seek the appropriate information that will help us make the right lifestyle choices to thrive in good health.”

The 5k run/walk begins at 8 a.m. outside the West Steps of the State Capitol. (The Expo, which is free to the public, is open until 11 a.m.).

Registration for the 5k remains open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fleet Feet Sports, 2311 J Street, Sacramento. Participants also may register Sunday from 6:45 to 8 a.m. outside the State Capitol. The fee to participate in the 5k is $39. There is no charge to attend the Expo.
