The 33rd Annual Moonlight Classic, to be held on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at CSUS Hornet Stadium, from 6 to 10pm is the oldest continuing Drum & Bugle Corp show in the Western U.S. Gates open to the public at 4:30 p.m.

It’s been described as “marching bands on steroids.”

However you label it, this is not your father’s Drum and Bugle Corps.

11 Drum & Bugle Corps from around the United States will be competing in this S.O.M.E (Sponsors of Musical Enrichment) fundraising event, sanctioned by Drum Corps International.

Competing corps can include up to 150 youths, ages 8-21, comprised of marching percussion and brass, front ensemble, (vibraphones, marimbas and other percussion instruments) and color guard. The color guard component has evolved from merely carrying the flag to now include dance and prop equipment such as rifles, sabers and other specialty items.

Each 11 minute performance which can span the entire football field, will include all of these elements in a meticulously choreographed presentation which, in past competitions, has included spectacular visuals like a field of mirrors, giving the illusion of doubling the size of the corps…. to a full-on Spartacus inspired gladiator match. Military drill has graduated to big-time show biz, and the appreciative crowds, which are expected in the thousands, love the show.

Corps are judged on musical performance, general effect on the audience, color guard,

Tickets can be purchased at the S.O.M.E. web site. someinc.com (Or at the gate that night)

Sac State once again screwed up another opportunity to have a repeat hosting of an awesome event. Tonight they could not get the stadium lights to turn on, so the event was cancelled at sunset before the last 4 teams could compete. In addition to the crowd not getting their full $20 ticket price worth, the entire crowd had to exit through one 6 foot wide exit by the ticket booth. Where was the Sac State facilities team? Not only could they not figure out how to turn on the lights, but they then couldn't open any of the other 3 exits in the stadium. What an embarrassment for our community. My apologies to the hundreds of drum & buge corp members that did not get to perform and the fans that were there to cheer them on. Adding insult to injury, Fox 40's story ends with "since the event was cancelled, fans will just have to return next year". What about the money S.O.M.E.took from me for the event tonight? Who should I expect a refund from?
