The primary election is right around the corner, and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Jonathan Rewers each agreed to sit with The Sacramento Press for interviews, and we are opening the floor to questions from our readers.

This is your chance to ask the candidates about the issues that mean the most to you.

Questions can be submitted via Twitter with the hashtag #SPchat or posted in the conversation below this article. Questions should be brief and direct – and, in the interest of covering new ground, no arena or strong mayor questions, please.

Both interview will be conducted as live Google Hangouts: The mayor's interview occur on Monday from 11 - 11:30 a.m., followed by Rewers' interview at 11:45 a.m. Readers whose questions are selected will be invited to participate.

If you’d like to submit a video question to the mayor, you can either record it yourself and Tweet us the link, or have us record it for you by coming to the Sacramento Press office at 431 I St. on Friday anytime between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. If your question is selected, we’ll show it to the mayor during the interview on Monday.

Today I received the Moving Sacramento Forward mailer Paid for by Re-elect Kevin Johnson for Mayor campaign; where Johnson lists numerous accomplishments. I have not received any literature from Rewers campaign regarding his career accomplishments. Were any mailers sent out? Also, accomplishments and efforts are worthy of mention however I would like both candidates to give us information about their character and what values they possess. I strongly feel integirty/ character is also an important factor for residents to consider when voting for a candidate. So much negative literature has been sent within my district (8) it's kind of hard to base decisions anymore on what we read or hear towards accomplishments and / or lack thereof.

Hi Ronda, I don't have the money that the Mayor does. So I deliver my fliers personally to each door as I walk them. If you would like to see it, it is posted on the internet at my site http://jonathan.rewersformayor2012.com

Thank you. I look forward to reading more on your website. The reason I ask about character is because no matter how many efforts one puts forward heck we can ask questions about improvements and changes that we'd like to see, but if people can't trust you, if they can't or are afraid to work with you well the efforts can start off strong but end poorly..... I do appreciate your response and I look forward to learning more about you and watching the interview.

It appears when people run for office in the city of Sac we need to get personal referrals extensive background checks from others they previously worked professionally with- lol. We already went through several city managers and we'd like to be able to keep one here since they appear to be running for the hils - just kidding. Good luck on your campaign.

That's true Rhonda, and we can usually tell about someone's political philosophy from their voting record. Mr. Rewers has ALWAYS chosen a Republican ballot in every election in which he's voted. His political contributions have only been to Republicans (including Arnold Schwarzenegger). He still has not responded to questions about whether he supported John McCain, Bob Dole, or Meg Whitman, I suspect, because he did when requesting Republican ballots. I urge voters to read Mr. Rewer's "solutions," most of which are a series of vague bullet points. It's easy to criticize an incumbent, as Mr. Rewers has been doing, but proposing solutions that are affordable and practical is an entirely different story.

Steve--You're right. The devil is in the details in any plan. Could you link to the mayor's plan for the next four years? I realize that no plan (the mayor's or Rewers') is going to have the details flushed out; indeed the mayor may only have a few bullet points about how he proposes to help get Sacramento on the right track. But it would be great to be able to compare his plan to Rewers just to get an idea.

By the way, speaking of party--can you tell me why Sacramento Democrats haven't endorsed Johnson for mayor?

If you want to know where someone is going, then you should look at where they've been. Not sure if you got the mail piece with the Mayor's accomplishments. I'll post something on the website. You should also check out the brief op-ed piece we were allowed to run in the Bee last week, and, of course you should join in the sacpress Q&A and ask that.

I can't speak for why the Sacramento "Democrats" haven't joined Gov. Brown, LG Newsom, AG Harris, Treasurer Lockyer, U.S. Senators Feinstein and Boxer, and Democratic mayors from around the state in supporting our Democratic mayor. The Bee speculated it was because of their opposition to the Mayor's position on education reform and the establishment of a charter school that has raised academic standards.

I have. I noticed that Rewers was appointed to his post by a councilmember who is very pro-union and, many would argue, a very progressive democrat who currently doesn't seem to see eye-to-eye with the Mayor. I did receive the mail piece about Johnson's accomplishments--well, pieces of it. I am not sure the postman was impressed or maybe his dog wasn't. The mayor's accomplishments looked a bit chewed.. and wet.

I have posted my question below. And of course I am not asking you to speculate--after all, you are very involved with the Sacramento Democrats so I figured you might know.

Actually, I'm not involved with the Sacramento County Democratic Party at all. I worked for the California Democratic Party, not the local committee.

Maviglio- You wrote, " He still has not responded to questions about whether...." Again, pot calling kettle black when you wouldn't respond to questions as whether Johnson supports Williams/ Better Business deceitful mailers. I guess you'd also "know how easy it is to criticize an incumbent....but proposing solutions that are affordable and practical is an entirely different story" Johnson has endorsed several mailers criticizing Pannell through Better Business. Today's mail criticizing Pannell has clearly printed in bold endorsed by mayor Kevin Johnson... Yesterday's mailer had endorsed by Mayor Johnson. Johnson endorsed her with no affordable and or practical solutions, Williams states she will "restore the services we pay for..." HOW?? Johnson's campaign can't criticize the way someone ran a campaign. Seems, you're fighting dirty. Your comment was not to address me; it appears an excuse to take jabs at jrewer2 on a public forum. Can't the mayor wait until the interview? Why are you taking jabs now?

Maviglio: You wrote, "If you want to know where someone is going, then you should look at where they've been" You are correct. I recall a few years ago a community member would post comments on Johnson and St Hope and how many could not work with him, strong arm tactics, deceit…..I honestly, gave Johnson the benefit of the doubt; but I'm seeing people flee city hall since Johnson has entered that building more than ever before. I see his endorsement and I believe input in an underhanded campaign against District 8 Pannell, when she labored hard for this district. I see you coming on here right now asking why the Sacramento "Democrats" haven't joined.... in supporting our Democratic mayor and stating " The Bee speculated it was because of their opposition to the Mayor's position on education reform and the establishment of a charter school that has raised academic standards." For Petes sake, Maviglio, why is it always someone else fault? Council opposes Johnson- you make Johnson the victim. Democratic party opposes Johnson, you make Johnson the victim. Do you always make the villain a victim? Some people can’t work with or support someone they do not trust. Heck, the Maloofs did not want to negotiate with Johnson - heck my guess is he used some of his dirty tactics as we’ve seen in the Pannell and Williams District 8 council seat when they tried to go to Anaheim. Maviglio, everyone does not oppose Johnson; some just oppose deceit and deceitful tactics. How the heck do we hold a mayor accountable when it is ALWAYS someone else fault and YOU always are the spokesperson/ scapegoat if something is said wrong? Gheez

Rhonda thank you and all for your wonderful questions. It will be nice finally to have a virtual discussion with the Mayor about the issues facing our City. I do love to debate Steve, but I don't think he is actually a candidate for anything? As to some of the comments, this beautiful Sacramento morning, my plan has been described as "vague" bullets - in comparison to the Mayor's piece. I am not sure that is fair. However, in fairness to the voters and the reading public, in development of my plan, you will see the items that are proposed that would cost money, actually have a cost associated with them - I have spreadsheets if anyone is interested. Second, my cost proposals and budget savings proposals were developed on a Sunday evening, while reviewing the Fiscal Year 2013 Budget. This was the same evening that Mayor Johnson was in D.C. at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Difference in style, I guess. Finally, as to political party and voting record, and a record of success, I have a signed resolution, signed by Mayor Johnson discussing all the "successes" I had in City Government going back to 1996, and thanking me for my dedicated service to our community. As to voting, take a look at the City Clerk's website - you find that many of the policy recommendations I developed Mayor Johnson voted for. There's the difference - substance, facts and figures, and transparency. That's the Mayor you will get when I am elected. Don't think that was all that vague.

Steve, since you seem to think the voters should think twice about voting for Rewers because of his party affiliation, do you also think that voters should give pause since KJ has taken thousands of dollars from Rupert Murdoch?

Isaac: the Leveson Inquiry over at the UK is looking into the corruption surrounding Murdoch. That Inquiry has already forced the resignation of countless high-ranking UK politicians (Blair and Hunt, the Culture Secretary, are the ones currently being examined) and the Inquiry has already mentioned, at least in passing, Murdoch's US holdings. So I am actually not unhappy about the Murdoch contribution....

According to Comstock's "lobbying firms spent roughly $737,000 a day last year getting their messages out at the Capitol" http://www.comstocksmag.com/Archive/0611_F_Party-Planning.aspx . The problem that Comstock's sees is that Sacramento views "the state government as an occupying force, not as any part of our economic engine." As a result, all too often lobbyists choose to hold their conferences in other cities which of course means we lose out on all that money.

How do you plan to change that attitude toward government so that we can parlay our status as California's capital into more economic activity?

Are you saying that if we have more people spending $737,000 per day in Sacramento that we will have less economic activity?

I should note (and you can take this with a grain of salt as I am getting this from our bartender friend who works at one of the lobbyist-favored hotels--so second-hand information) but he tells us that the worse the economy, the more the lobbying. So, to the extent that we're missing out on that (quite lucrative) revenue stream we are losing jobs.

That is, assuming he's right of course.

Well, look. I personally don't think that any mayor can do much to influence the economy directly. i think there are studies that back me up on this. But what the mayor does have is a bully pulpit and he or she can use that to change attitudes about rich people who happen to be lobbyists. Because the more welcome we can make those rich people feel in Sac, the more likely they are to come down here and spend their money here.

And that would be great for our economy.

With UC Davis Med center in Down Town, UC Davis Med School down the road, and the Silicon Valley just a short jaunt down the road, what will you, as mayor, do to entice biomedical research and technological research jobs and other medical technology jobs to come to the Sacramento region?

Kat6169--do you know about SARTA? Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance? We are specifically working on growing the biomed/medtech industry in the Sacramento region. Tuesday, June 5th is our annual Med Tech Showcase and our featured speaker is Gregory Sorensen, M.D., the CEO of Siemens Healthcare North America. We are expecting about 300 people to attend, including startups & established companies that are already in the Sacramento region (we've counted and mapped 113 such companies). I'm not trying to turn this into a promo but I wanted to let you know that there is a non-profit technology alliance working on these very things. You can find out more at SARTA.org. The City of Sacramento economic development department has supported the work of SARTA for many years.

Three questions:
What will you do to revitalize the commercial corridors?
Do you support a permanent moratorium on building in the Natomas Flood Basin?
Do you support an increase of the inclusionary housing ordinance to fund building housing for the low-income and homeless?

1. Why does the city focus on retail subsidies over market rate residential projects? It is a lack of a solid customer base (residents) that impacts the health of the retail sector.

2. Why does it take on average 2 years for a business to get all of its permits from city staffers? Sacramento was recently rated the worst city in America to try and start a business. Would propose city staff have an absolute deadline to complete their review of any project under $5,000,000 in six months. It is unconscionable that Viriakas is still waiting for permits on the Triangle Project after what...five years? The city is just as much a loser as the developers as it is losing the increased tax revenue from the enhanced value of the properties...apparently so city staffers can collect fees. .

As both candidates know, due to the deficit, considerable cuts have been proposed to Sacramento's vital services. You both work for the City. Are there any "perks," for lack of a better term, that you currently receive as part of your job that you would be willing to give up to show that we are, indeed, all in it together?
