I was preparing for bed and decided to take a look at today's mail. I received another campaign mailer Paid for By Better Sacramento Political Action Committee, major funding by Western Electrical Contractors Association, Inc. Good Government PAC, Mark Friedman and Frank Ramos.

The mailer has a photo of a pastor written next to him are the words:

Bonnie Pannell has disappointed us.

"All too often I have witnessed her stand in the way"

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is working hard to improve our community--- to create real jobs, grow economy, reform our stagnant government, and increase much needed public safety.

Sadly, our Mayor can't count on City Councilwoman Bonnie Pannell to listen honestly and without the influence of 'other interest." Instead of helping, all too often I have witnessed her stand in the way of progress.

I firnly believe that to move our great city and district forward, it's time for visionary new leadership.
signed Dr. Darryl B. Heath, Pastor.

The back of the mailer states:

BONNIE PANNELL HAS FAILED OUR COMMUNITY:

Voted to cut 82 police officers' jobs while hiring a new city manager for $300,000 a year. Sacramento Bee, 08-11-11

Asked, "why are we spending more money on thepolice department if we have the second highest crime rate in the state?" Sacramento Observer, 09-09-11

"While voting to cut public safety, Bonnie Pannell voted to pay a new city manager $305,000 plus a $150,000 bonus- making him the highest paid employee in Sacramento history."- Crime Victims United of California Advisory Board Member Sabrina Berhane

Bonnie Pannell "is stunningly tone-deaf...pay hikes for top bureaucrats ought to be off the table." Sacramento Bee, 12-18-10

Pannell told a citizen: 'Screw folks' constitutional rights." Sacramento News and Review 12-08-11

She even called a 61-year-old woman an "a**hole." Fox 40 News

The Sacramento Bee says Pannell is "Stunningly tone-deaf:"" While laying off workers and cutting services, she demanded big pay raises for two of Sacramento's highest paid bureaucrats, saying they were "underpaid."

Does this pastor live in our district? Is the church in our district?

The mailer fails to mention Councilmember Pannell is endorsed by the Sacramento Bee and Sacramento News & Review.

This is absolutely unbelievable. For a pastor to state "All to often I have witnessed her stand in the way" is unbelievable. I invite the pastor to come on this site and share all the times he has witnessed Pannell stand in the way. In the way of what?

Sadly, residents in District 8 can't count on a Pastor to see through deceit--unbelievable.

Williams is blessed. Councilmember Pannell decided to not fight dirty and send out mailers pulling all her quotes out of context.

Councilmember Bonnie Pannell has not disappointed me.

Dr. Darryl B. Heath, Pastor has disappointed me!- and without a vision the people will perish. Unbelievable!

Disclosure: District 8 resident

This is an outrage. Shame on candidate Williams, You are embarrassing. Shame on Mayor Johnson- You are embarrassing. Surely Better Sacramento Political Action Committee did not know this pastor. Shame on the pastor for not doing his homework before putting his face on this mailer. Absolutely unbelievable. By any means necessary Ms Williams? I invite you to come on this site and have a discussion and please bring the pastor with you. I can put many of the above mentioned quotes in context. But first I want to see if you are aware of what it is you pulled out of context. SHAMEFUL.

To be fair to Williams, there is no shame on her for this mailing because it is sent by an independent expenditure. For Williams to have any influence at all on what the independent expenditure does would be against the law.

I understand why you are outraged by the mailing, but your outrage should be directed to "Better Sacramento Political Action Committee, major funding by Western Electrical Contractors Association, Inc. Good Government PAC, Mark Friedman and Frank Ramos."

I disagree telling only part of the truth makes it a whole different statement and using a false statement makes it dishonest. To leave out the most important to manipulate someone’s opinion about the topic is misleading, wrong and deceitful.

Example: Williams has stated Pannell is “out of touch with reality or is totally uncaring about the crimes" that have occurred in her district. However regarding “screw folks constitutional rights” Pannell has said she is tired of the deaths and violence and wanted to keep the youth alive. She said she wanted them to live…. Pannell thanked law enforcement and supported them.

The council unanimously agreed to accept $600,000 in state homeland security funds to purchase and install more than 30 surveillance cameras in high crime areas. I was at the council session. The ACLU was in attendance. I don’t recall seeing NAACP Betty Williams speaking up for our constitutional rights.

“Johnson, who had nothing but good things to say about the Sac police and their thoughtful approach to balancing civil liberties with pubic safety: “I’m very proud when we think about public safety being a top priority and you and your team certainly finding ways to be innovative during these challenges." SNR

The quote does not tell us Mayor Johnson alleges he fought for the grant that would violate constitutional rights. Johnson and Williams are also in essence saying screw constitutional rights!! Johnson did so to give kudos to law enforcement for the grant and I’m not sure about Williams she probably didn’t understand it like she didn’t understand the item on the agenda regarding pay day loan advance companies on every block.

So does the pastor endorse half truths; he sees progress as Johnson also balancing civil liberties with public safety and Williams, then President of NAACP, sitting mute with the loss of civil liberties??? How in the heck could he put his face on this mailer without knowing the entire truth behind each and every quote and Williams and Johnson’s position on the matters. Johnson claimed he “fought for” the law enforcement grant to have cameras in high crime areas.

I’m waiting for Johnson, Williams and the Pastor Please can we have a discussion in reference to the mailers you are endorsing in the district I reside. You can’t fool all of us.

I've attended a lot of council session, meetings.... I have not forgotten anything that concerned me and I can fill pages with concerns I had of Williams and Johnson throughout the years!!!!!!!!!!!! 14yrs on the council and they found 6 misleading quotes thats nothing compared to all their slip ups. I'm waiting for Williams, Johnson and the Pastor to respond on the site. Please come out and play. I am OUTRAGED at the deceit and misleading propaganda you are sending in our district

Keith, I feel it is appropriate for me to be outraged with Williams and Johnson -for condoning it- because if elected my district will not be represented by "Better Sacramento Political Action Committee, major funding by Western Electrical Contractors Association, Inc. Good Government PAC, Mark Friedman and Frank Ramos."

"Councilmember Pannell is endorsed by the Sacramento News & Review."

That tells me all I need to know. Vote for Betty Williams.

Unfortuntely the two choices in this race is who is the least worse of the two candidates. I do not condone dirty campaigning in any way but, for the most part, this mailer is all facts - dirty campaigning is when you make up negatives to slam an opponent.

Bonnie Pannell did indeed say "screw folks' constitutional right." Here's the story: http://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/your-rights-take-hard-lefts/content?oid=637851

Thank you for providing this link I was recalling another issue when our constitutional rights were being violated -- with cameras-- and a similar discussion at city hall where the council unanimously agreed to the violation. In this instance Pannell was looking out for the kids who go to the Martin Luther King library and protecting them from pornography. Shouldn't a Pastor agree with that? Her heart was in the right place!!

Sactownpoliticalobserver: Exactly. Thank you! A 13yr-old boy was molested by a pastor in the library. Around that time I was in the library several times a week sending out emails.... The library in our district was always filled with young kids. Councilwoman Pannell's heart is in the right place. She genuinely cares about the youth in the district. It is unfortunate the newsreview article did not make mention of the fact a young boy had been molested... Being a mother she felt the pain of what that family went through and wanted to protect the kids in the district. The same thing with the cameras heck when I called to complain of the cameras I was told she's going to do what she has to protect the kids. I had to respect her for it.

Some of us, both within District 8 and surrounding districts, have so little trust having been deceived so often. I cannot embrace someone (Johnson and Williams) who has chosen deceit over truth. If we don't stand for something (truth) we will fall for anything (deceit) Williams and Johnson have crossed the line using a pastor to spread this deceitful venom. I am disgusted. We can’t have people who need to take steps towards healing not trusting our church… Shameful.

Regardless how one feels about library computer use and images that might be harmful to kids, ya gotta admit that saying out loud in an open meeting "screw folks' constitutional rights" is outrageous, unprofessional, and downright SCARY.

When she was sworn into office, she promised to UPHOLD our Constitution. To say out loud in front of everyone "screw folks' constitutional rights," which is not taken out of context in any way, she demonstrated outright CONTEMPT for our Constitution.

This sort of public emotional outburst is common for Ms. Pannell and, frankly, is one of the things I dislike most strongly about her.

Sir, I attended a lot of meetings where lots of stuff was said out loud... were as some felt comfortable around the people they were speaking with. She said, " “Excuse my language, but screw folks’ constitutional right.”. Which you know because you provided the link. What neither you or I know is what was said within the group prior to her saying it or how she ended her phrase/ conversation....

So no sir, I can't say that it was outrageous, unprofessional or downright scary having attended many meetings and later seen things not written exactly as it was delivered. I have seen her heart and her values. I think it was more of an emotional remark that the media picked up and ran with. But whatever the case, what is outrageous, unprofessional and downright scary to me is the sly fox not the outspoken lamb. Heck, There are things I strongly dislike about Ashby.....

Seems if Pannell’s remarks were, as you say, common; heck she's been in office 14yrs and they couldn’t have come up with more than 6 quotes! LOL If I lived in District 1, your friend or not, I'd watch Ashby more than I would Pannell. lol Ashby scares me! With Pannell what you see is what you get, her heart is on her sleeve, she’s not calculating…. And owes no favors to Johnson or SPOA

Casey, I appreciate the desire to keep comments on topic and constructive, but it is a valid concern -- there is a bit of filibustering going on.

what the heck? "a bit of filibustering going on" Really their is no reason to be concerned of filibustering lol.. I wrote the opinion piece, naturally it is a concern for me and I‘d have more to say. And it would seem I’d have more comments since I’m replying to the comments of others on the opinion I wrote. Come on now, filibustering was going on when Maviglio responded to my previous opinion article on the day he knew, and I didn’t, the mailer shown above was sent to residents. Lol Maviglio, could not say it was wrong and Johnson does not condone it because he knew another mailer - a more shameful- one was sent. What appears odd is you appear to keep missing the actions of the sly foxes and throw suspect towards others who really are thinking with their hearts. I have lived in this district most of my adult life…. I’ve seen Pannell at countless meetings over the last 7 years if their was a bad, distasteful, deceitful bone in her body she would not have been able to conceal it from me. This is business for me; not personal. I’m not trying to make friends or enemies. I'm genuinely concerned and want the best representation for those within District 8. So, as a concerned resident of District 8; I fight and labor for our district- It should be a valid concern if I didn't.

Heck, where is a citywide mailer from Better Sacramento throwing out all Johnson's dirty laundry which were against the law......................... HOW can Johnson condone this, it is the pot calling the kettle black. HOW can the Pastor forgive statements, accusations, criminal offenses of Johnson and not be disappointmed by it when Pannell made statements from the heart trying to look at for the youth of the community. Where are the district 8 mailers of Williams negative accusations towards law enforcement?? So we have an anyway the wind blow candidate and the Pastor condones it?? I apologize for all the postings and taking so much time on this matter. But I am very upset--deeply wounded-- that Williams and Johnson through"Better Sacramento Political Action Committee", would use a pastor- a man of God- to spread their venom. That hurts me so deeply!!
