Since 1992, when the Sacramento Police and Sheriff's Memorial was created, many have come to honor Sacramento Police officers and deputies who have been killed in the line of duty for the 10th year.
Grief of the loss can linger for many years. Annual ceremonies help to deal with grief and remind us all an officer's death was not in vain.

Sacramento Police Chief Rick Braziel shared a recent incident. Yesterday a man who had stopped an armed gunman on a rampage during a recent SMUD shooting was honored by the Police Dept. He told the officers " I acted and did something maybe five or ten minutes when I stepped forward and did something."
He said to the officers "all of you do this every single day. And for that I thank you." Chief Braziel thanked all of the officers for what they do everyday. "To the survivors, friends and family, it is important for us to come out here and do this," Braziel said. "We don't forget our friends and these are friends here we honor here today. And we'll never forget that."
Sheriff Scott Jones thanked everyone for coming out and to pray we won't have to add a 35th name.
