HealthCorps held its first Sacramento Gala "journey to Oz" at the Memorial Auditorium recently. Around 500 supporters came to the event co-hosted by founders Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa Oz.

Earlier in the day Dr. Oz made a surprise visit to Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services and held a healthy food competition at Hiram High School.

The Auditorium was a visual wonderment for raising funds for the non-profit's national wellness movement and proven high school mentoring program as well as new initiatives to expand its impact across the country, according to a spokesperson. Healthy foods and fitness info were all everywhere one looked.

Celebrity guests included Montel Williams, Ben Vereen and Mayor Kevin Johnson who presentd th Oz couple a key to Sacramento.

Here's some photos of the event:

  • Using peer-mentoring to deliver an experiential curriculum in nutrition, fitness and mental strength, Coordinators give teens purpose, help develop human character and inspire an interest in health and culinary arts careers.
  • Co-founded by heart surgeon and Emmy Award-winning talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa Oz, HealthCorps also serves as a unique research laboratory to explore the complex, underlying causes of the obesity crisis and discover and communicate solutions.
  • Bringing many initiatives together to activate the students’ mind, body and spirit, HealthCorps is transforming the educational paradigm one school at a time.

Our three priorities:

1)  Educating Students - HealthCorps’ national peer mentoring program spans 53 high schools in 13 states (AZ, CA, DC, DE, FL, LA, MD, MS, NJ, NY, OH, OR, TX).  By 2015, HealthCorps aspires to have a presence in 100 schools in all 50 states.

Good event coverage and photos. Just want to point out that the man dancing between Dr. and Lisa Oz in the photos is not Ben Vereen.

That gentlemen was Stepp Stewart who is one of HealthCorps Ambassadors. Ben Vereen did perform however.
