Mayor Kevin Johnson and City Councilwoman Bonnie Pannell haven’t always seen eye to eye – one of the factors in his decision to support opponent Betty Williams in the race for Pannell’s District 8 council seat.

“I want to work with people who are open to a vision and an agenda to move the city forward,” Johnson said at his weekly press conference Tuesday. “If somebody has an agenda that is clearly just to vote in a different way, or if the mayor comes up with an idea and people are just going...

I think Bonnie is effective !! If you listen, you do know where she stands on issues. I trust that you folks really don't want every city council member to talk to death every issue at every meeting. And the Mayor - you like his double speak and misrepresentation of the arena and the prepayment obligation for the Maloofs? He pushed for a deal that didn't exist - but perhaps some of the above comments fell he at least has no lack of transparency.

In the years watching city council meetings, I have found Bonnie Pannell disappointing with her lack of contributing any substantial dialogue to the forum. It’s as though she is just a spectator rather than a contributor to meaningful topics. This leaves me with the impression transparency of important city issues are not her style. Whether she delivers a clearness of issues outside of city council meetings is one thing. However, it would be refreshing to actually hear her articulate issues in a public forum so that there would be no speculation regarding her lack of transparency.

Kevin has actual power. And he could be a really effective leader. Look, we live in a City where we can look at a strong-Governor form of government first-hand. I am referring, of course, to State government. If you think that the State works and worked really, really well (or at least equally well) under Arnold's weak leadership as it does under Jerry's strong one, then you should support the strong mayor initiative. If, on the other hand, you feel that 1) the strong-Governor system does not always produce optimal results and 2) that having a strong Governor matters more than legislating a strong Governor position then you should oppose it.
