The Features lead singer John Pride narrates a new mini-documentary video produced by SacTV.com called "The Features Return to Sacramento." He talks about his connection with R.E.M., who the Features opened for back in the 1980s. He also talks about his view of the local music scene when he came to town. Although the scene was not swamped with new wave acts, he found a way to make punk and new wave work in Sacramento, which was known more for blues and cover bands.
We played Harry's, as well as Fat Fonzie's, Rock Factory, Beaverbrook's, Spanky's, Shire Road, El Dorado Saloon, Sac State, and about a dozen other venues in town. We toodled around in a '55 Wonder Bread truck, humping gear (before we got roadies, a couple of years in) and keeping our gear working. Great fun, those days.

Thanks Alex; good memories. Working at the Sacramento Union in the 1980s, we were right across the street from Harry's Bar & Grill (now the 4th Street Grill), and one of the perks of the job was getting in for free and seeing all of the club acts you mentioned, as well as Secret Service, fronted by Kitty O'Neil. I've posted the 50 or so Sacramento area concerts I reviewed for the Union at my archives web site:

Actually, KPOP did play the Features' album "Up Up Side Side" whenever they got requests (they got a lot) and whenever they interviewed us (usually with Charlee Simons). We were never in regular rotation, though. People say they heard us on other stations too, but that was probably requests, as well. KPOP broadcast us live a couple of times, too.

This is great, thanks Alex! I'd like to add that many local stations played The Features by request, and KROY FM broadcast us live, twice. Local support was a huge gift to Sac musicians at the time - we appreciate it to this day! Johnny Pride, The Features.
