Couture Press assembled a team of local and Bay area designers for an afternoon of music, fun and fashion on Sunday, March 18. The show, “Where Dreams Begin 2012,” also included several hair and makeup artists who displayed their magnificent talent in front of a packed house at The Station Bistro and Lounge in Roseville.

The Couture Press event, showcasing spring 2012 collections, did a great job putting the show together. Dericka Porter, Couture Press CEO and President, welcomed guests to the event. Porter also introduced the musical duo of Rich and Crystal, who entertained at various intervals during the show. Crystal Marie walked the runway besides showcasing her vocal talents during the live music performance.

Porter, Davina D'nay Brown and other Couture Press representatives worked hard to bring the event to the stage. Their efforts created a superb atmosphere and an enjoyable show.

Designer Yennie Zhou, who was recently showcased at Sacramento Fashion Week, brought her wonderful designs and Y Couture to the fashion show. Her colorful, somewhat unusual, and always fashionable designs showcased several elegant dresses made out of magazines. Designs such as these allow Zhou to use diverse forms and mediums and bring them to the stage.

Zhou’s designs piqued the audience’s interest. Her elegant gowns help Y Couture fashion bring out the beauty of those who wear her designs.

As the last model for Zhou’s collection returned to the runway, she was met by Zhou, who wore a simple yet elegant outfit that accentuated her pregnant radiance. Zhou will be delivering, as she put it, “Any minute now.” Her joyful personality is always fun to see.

Only Golden Goddess Boutique had several models walk down the runway with a few simple and attractive dresses. The boutique specializes in beautiful Moroccan, Moroccan Cotton, Sustsi, Indonesian, Balinese, artsy, gypsy, hippy, sexy and bohemian clothing.

Zarah'Nized Wear
has been showcasing many designs around Sacramento at various venues. Her colorful designs are always complemented by Jackhair Bydarlene. The mother-daughter combination put their extraordinary talent together for Sunday’s show.

Zarah’s fashion for the show was inspired by the Tokyo night life with a twist of crazy colors and fun prints. Zarah’s talented models always seem to shine on the runway and Sunday was no exception. Loud cheers were heard at different intervals.

Zarah has been working on her 2012 spring-summer wear and preparing for the fashion show for Couture Press for the last two weeks.

“I wanted to do a little work as I was inspired by Tokyo fashion. I like to put in a lot of prints and colors. I also design event wear so you can wear it to any special event such as weddings,” said Zarah.

Zarah also has an upcoming fashion show on March 27 and is working on a swimwear collection and a line of Tokyo-inspired wear.

“Ever since I was a little girl I’ve liked colors and neon green is my favorite color. That color really pops out at me. A while back I was looking at pictures on the internet and one picture really came through to me. It was a Tokyo night life image that had bright lights and lots of colors. It was that image that grabbed my imagination,” said Zarah, talking about her work for this year.

As guests walked into The Station, an art piece created by Daniel Chimowitz hung from the wall. Reminiscent of pop art from the 60’s, the art piece was a great touch for a fashion event.

Chimowitz’ collection and outside the box thinking allowed his designs to incorporate art and fashion. Vibrant colors jumped out as his wear was donned by models walking the runway. Hair and makeup also went beyond the ordinary, giving great overall ambiance to the Love Profit collection.

Shoes, jeans, belts, t-shirts and colorful tops worn by the models seemed to go “pop, pop, pop” as they walked down the runway. The colors and combination of accessories created flamboyant and colorful art.

Chimowitz collaborated with Victor Tung for at least one of the designs exhibited at the fashion show. Their extraordinary designs and clothing created fulgurate art in motion.

Local designer Edward John Radanovich III showcased a new spring-summer collection. Radanovich is another talented designer that has emerged from the International Academy of Design & Technology of Sacramento.

Radanovich’s designs were quite popular at the event. His attention to detail and quality were manifested in the mostly one-piece outfits that were complemented by neck bows of the same material.

The attire worn by the models not only showcased Radanovich’s talent but accented the models’ figures as they proudly walked down the runway. Radanovich’s designs can be seen and purchased at The House of Edward John Radanovich III, which was founded in 2009. The House of Edward John Radanovich III specializes in providing the contemporary woman with elegant, sophisticated and creative designs. Custom creations are also part of their collection and can be created by request.

Ajiale Couture
also brought a wonderful collection to the fashion show. A great blend of colors and fabric caught the attention of the audience. Some of the designs bordered on risqué and those really caught the attention of the audience.

The Ajiale Couture collection caters to women from all walks of life and size doesn’t matter, as the audience was able to see firsthand. The collection was very elegant and elegantly alluring. Many of the stylish and cutting age Ajiale designs and collections are available on their website.

The fashion show featured Lluvy Gomez and Noelle Staggers from America’s Next Top Model (Cycle 4) and many local models.

After the show ended I was able to talk to each of them about their experiences with modeling and the popular television series.

When asked about her experience with America’s Next Top Model Gomez elaborated.

“It was an awesome experience. I was in Cycle 4 of Top Model and it was the first Cycle shot in L.A. It was a surprise when we found out it was going to take place in L.A. because previous segments had been shot in New York.”

Gomez also talked about her modeling experience.

“I’ve been modeling ever since the show ended. I now have two little boys and I’ve done pregnancy modeling as well. I was signed with Expecting Models out of New York and L.A. I think that Top Model is great in helping audiences connect by giving a name to models. Usually when you know a model you remember their face only so Top Model gives personality to the models. It allows audiences the opportunity to know them.”

Gomez considered herself a “full-time mommy” but is now updating her portfolio and noted this was her second show with Couture Press.

Gomez also had some advice for aspiring models.

“There are a lot of good agencies out there and it really doesn’t take much to become involved with one of them. I know many models think they have to go to modeling schools and pay all kinds of money. If an agent really wants you, I suggest you just go to the agency during a casting call. I really like to encourage people to try and get local work and just try to get some experience. Any kind of experience is also good,” said Gomez.

America’s Next Top Model Noelle Staggers also answered some questions regarding her modeling career.

“It was a really good learning experience and it put me in contact with a lot of people. It gave me a really good networking opportunity,” said Staggers, “I modeled a lot after the show and then I took a break to be a mom. He’s nine now so I thought it was a good time to get back and become involved in modeling… I’ve been doing a lot of artsy shoots lately. I’ve done different shoots with different themes and posing for portraits. The portraits are painted somewhat avant-garde and I have not done much runway shows. Lately I’ve been doing mainly artistic posing.”

When asked what type of advice she would give new models Staggers shared her philosophy.

“I would tell them love yourself first. Always love yourself and love your body the way it is and also be confident.”

Couture Press created a great gathering place for designers, models, photographers, vendors, and makeup and hair stylists to get together, network and share their talents. They also conduct fun and exciting workshops for aspiring models.

Couture Press also represents independent talent in the fashion industry and shows like Where Dreams Begin allow them the opportunity to shine. The show was very enjoyable and it helped promote local talent.

Also I will say I loved Every single line out there except a group of us didnt care for Zarah'Nized wear. They were not put together like the other models, We have seen her in other shows and its always the same. Posing is horrible, models are not good, too much make up which takes away from her garments, and their walk is always completely different from the rest of the show which NEVER looks good.
Couture Press of course beacuase they are Couture Press are a hit but would like to not see Zarah'Nize wear in the line up next time.
Also Im siging my two daughters up for the Couture Press Charm School for the Model workshops I cant wait to see the outcome.

Thank you

I would like to say that it is not easy to get on stage and walk like the models from the show did. If you simply just did not like the fashion that is fine but to negatively criticize brave people who are having fun and doing what they love is not very nice. If you think you know how to model better then them come by and give us some tips, we are always up for constructive criticism.

Who are you to say things like that? If you don't have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. And don't give misconceptions about what really happened...EVERYONE...did an awesome job.

Why are you yelling at her. She is just simply stating her opinion. Breath you guys it will be okay. Just take it as a learning curve. You can either take it or leave it. Just say thank you for your opinion and move on you guys. Your line isn't ugly it was the many poses you guys kept doing. I feel if you did less possing it will show the garment more. I feel the posing really showcases the model not the designer. Please just take this as a note to remember or try it out for a show and see what will come from it. Please don't get hurt behind what I said.

I attended the show and thought the article and photos by David were very good. I dont agree with the comment about Zahra's clothing line. I dont work for Darlene or Zahra, but i have seen them in several shows in the past few yrs. They have evolved in doing different styles and try to include as many people as possible and the models are very loyal and thankful for the opportunities. I thought they blended in very well to this event and could see the hard work put in behind the scenes.

Every designer and every model have their own style. That is what makes them unique and a joy to work with. The mother and daughter team of Darlene and Zarah have brought creativ, edgy, fun and inspiring looks to what they do. They don't show fashion, they also entertain. Their approach is always a team effort and the out comes are often copied. Not every artist is appreciated by everyone, but must still respect the creativty they employ in creating the art.

The Sacramento Press invites everyone to share their opinions. While we do not allow personal attacks, we certainly invite (and encourage) constructive criticism.

Thanks to everyone for participating in the lively dialogue.

I have had the pleasure of photography Zarah' s collection on numerous occassion, when Zarah and Darlene put together a show, the fashion and makeup remind me of the fashions of the young japaness women who frequent the harasuko train station In Toyko. The colors are vibrant, and the make up over the top. Every designer has their own music, if you send time at fashion shows you will see a great diversity, in color, stying, make up and hair.

Unfortunately anyone who works in fashion, entertainment, et al, will always be scrutinized, ridiculed, torn apart, etc... That is the nature of the business... There is always someone who thinks they can do things better, but put them to the test and they crumble. Take the criticism with a pinch of salt, chew on the meat and spit out the bones... I personally admire anyone who believes in themselves and shoots for the stars regardless of the "ugly"... Keep up your efforts Zarah, and you will succeed!

The whole show was great. I really liked the first line. The first three dresses was the most creative. She used MAGAZINES! Did you even noticed that. I thought that was way cool! Then the dress with the gold was cool too. I wanna buy that dress.
