Mayor Kevin Johnson said 13 companies have expressed interest in leasing the city’s parking system for the next 50 years – a move he described as “promising” as the city looks to bring in $240 million to finance an arena through the process.

“(The responses) show a lot of interest. That is consistent with what we expected,” Mayor Kevin Johnson said Tuesday at his weekly press conference. “It is really encouraging.”

The 13 “letters of intent” arrived after the city sent more than 100 letters to parking operators across the nation in early January. The deadline for interested parties to respond was Monday.

The names of the interested companies will be released Thursday, Johnson said.

Although there is yet to be a completed term sheet outlining the conditions of a potential lease, Johnson said suggestions of parking rate increases could be a deal-breaker for the city.

“Some other cities (that leased their parking) have seen their parking rates go sky high, and that is just not acceptable for us,” he said.

Johnson wouldn’t speculate about how much a final contract might bring the city, but he said he believes the responses create a competitive environment where bidding will be pushed to the higher end of the estimated $180 million - $240 million range.

City staff and parking representatives will review the responses to verify qualifications and shorten the list of potential bidders, Johnson said. That “short list” should be ready for the City Council to consider by Feb. 14, he added.

Yesterday we heard about a local group being "in the hunt" for the parking monetization scheme. When I saw that Priority Parking was part of that partnership...alarms and bells went off.

Here's how free enterprise works with regards to parking...raise rates to whatever the market will bear...buyer beware.

These posts are a few years old, but this happens on an ongoing basis.....

May 20, 2008: At the same time this photo was taken, the city garage around the corner on 14th & H was pre-paying for $8 for the same event.

Anything that Aaron Zeff (owner PriorityParking) is a part of or has anything to do with.... alarms should be going off. His misuse of PBID funds to advance his personal agenda of activating alley's is just the tip of the iceberg. the owner of Priority being appointed by himself as the Midtown parking Czar... Conflict of interest.... Nahh!
