View from top of Hyatt parking garage (Image by: Kati Garner) K Street was a happenin' place last night. The revival of automobile traffic lured lots of folks to see Sacramento history repeating itself.

I was perched on top of Hyatt's parking garage. I was in good company; K St Venues was blowing mass quantities of confetti from here, as well as across the street onto, the parade of cars.

Crowds lined the streets along K and 12th. Restaurants were busy.

Here are some photos from last night: The parade of cars lined up in the alley entering 12th St. (Image by: Kati Garner) This yellow rebuilt truck windshield reflects the Chase Tower. No Parking allowed and there are passenger drop-off/pick-up zones.

Streetcars had been out of service for 20 years by the time that K Street was converted into a pedestrian mall--and for two years by the time the Crest opened in 1949. The 20 years after the end of streetcar operation, and following the opening of Sacramento's first suburban shopping centers, mark the era of K Street's initial decline.

Re-branding K Street as a suburban-friendly shopping center doesn't work. Downtown Sacramento has to offer a different product--the urban experience itself--to set itself apart.

Totally agree with you about creating something different than suburbia. Sacramento has plenty of suburbia if that's your thing but we have a very thin urban veneer which is pathetic for the hub for two million people.
