Conversation on The Sacramento Press about: New lofts at 14th and R

At street level, the news at 14th and R Streets in the Grid is a whole row of new dining establishments: The Shady Lady bar and restaurant on the corner, Magpie Catering, Top This yogurt shop and Burgers and Brew. And there's a fifth establishment that doesn't serve food: hair styling diva Marci Landgraf's return to the salon business, yet to be named. (See Colleen Belcher’s Sacramento Press story tomorrow on the downstairs restaurants, which either have opened or will open in the next week.)

Not everyones dream is a home with a yard -with two friends who just bought forclosed homes - most of the properties we viewed needed a lot of work to be move-in ready. That kind of investment and ongoing maintenance isn't for everyone - plus, yardwork - again, not everyones thing. A key component of good neighborhoods is housing choices. Single family, townhouse, duplex, apts, lofts, etc. Plus, this is one of the few buildings that gives residents and patrons the authentic loft experience of a a real converted warehouse rather than a new building trying to be something it is not. R Street has a few of these gems left & if these sell well it sets the example that rehab and reuse is viable / profitable so we don't lose the opportunity to save -rehab and use in a new way the remaining bits of our industrial past on R Street.

It's a neat, low maintenance, practical small home in the grid, a block from lightrail with urban nightlife not so much on your doorstep as under your doorstep. Whether or not it has anything to do with appearance, the people who will find them appealing would probably ask the same question in reverse.

Why would anyone want to spend $200,000 on a loft that's only 500-1000 square feet when they can buy a foreclosed home for way less? I guess that's the price to pay for wanting to keep up the appearance of being "trendy."
