Folded Circle Cube and Disc, a fourteen-foot sculpture weighing 3,000 lbs. by artist Fletcher Benton, was Installed at the corner of O and 3rd Streets.

Benton’s work is included in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.

The artist was awarded the International Sculpture Center’s award for Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture in 2008.

Folded Circle Cube and Disc was donated to the Museum by Frank and Lill Anderson of the Bay area. Lill has known Benton since the late 1950's.

Installation of the piece required a crane. Here's a few pictures of the installation: The base was installed so that the sculpture can be rotated simply by a push by a person. (Image by: Kati Garner)

Workers protected the art by covering it before it was moved by the crane. (Image by: Kati Garner)

The art was moved from the street onto the Crocker's lawn and lowered onto the base. (Image by: Kati Garner)

The final piece, a rod of steel, was put into place. (Image by: Kati Garner)

Great shots, Kati...the B&W does nice, especially on the shots with the museum itself in the background

Hi DKS, thanks for asking! The baseball player sculptures by Lisa Reinertson were taken down a few years ago because they needed some conservation work, but they are now installed in front of the West Sacramento City Hall. The sculptures were created for outdoor display, so we don't plan on displaying them inside the Museum in the future. You can see another work by the artist on the first floor of the Museum. It's a clay sculpture called "Wolf Rider, Ophelia's Return."

Why is it in West Sacramento again? I don't understand that at all. Thanks for taking our sculpture and giving it to another city. What was wrong with Crocker Park or any other place in our town. Midtown has a dearth of public sculptural art. It could have come here.
