I attended the Kings victory rally at Cesar Chavez Plaza last night, but I did so reluctantly. I am on record as being somewhat immune to Kings fever, to say the least. I appreciate them for what they do for the town, and I am sensitive to what their departure would mean for us as a city.

It wouldn’t be good.

But I’m not a fan. So I went grudgingly, mostly because I live nearby and it was on my way somewhere else. It was a news event regarding a crucial current concern. Why not?

I left, if ...

Nice piece, DWB. I'm not a huge basketball/sports fan, but like you, I "get" how important this team is to our community. To me, that's enough reason to keep them here. I know there are many who are irritated by the Maloofs, as is the previous poster, but in my view it's really not about them--rather, it's about the vital force (and economic stimulus) this team has brought to our community. If there's any way to keep them here, I'm all for it.

I appreciate what the Kings mean to some people, and that there are genuine fans who love them. But this whole relationship with the Maloofs, them threatening to leave and then acting like they're so beneficent by deciding to stay, and us celebrating that...feels a little like the girl who's baby daddy smacks her on Jerry Springer, but who takes him back, cuz she's "sure he'll change, he just needs time."
