The City Council voted 5-4 Tuesday night against promoting Interim City Manager Gus Vina to the permanent city manager position.

Council members Sandy Sheedy, Rob Fong, Kevin McCarty, Darrell Fong and Bonnie Pannell voted to conduct a national search for a new city manager.

Mayor Kevin Johnson briefed reporters after he and the members of the City Council held a private meeting about Vina’s job status.

Johnson said the council feels that Vina did a “great job” as interim city manager. However, he said the City Council voted to conduct a national search for a city manager candidate.

Johnson said he hopes that Vina will apply for the job as part of the national search.

Vina was not immediately available for comment.

Shame on them but typical. Penalize those that know the inside of the city, perform well and know their jobs but send out a fishing expedition for those whose performance is unknown. But would any know a good manager from a bad as evidenced by their failing to recognize five years of the last city manager's developer favoritism, which created much of the mess the city is in?

Yep - that's our Council for ya. Residents like Vina, staff trust him and he has integrity. As our former finance director, his leadship and competent management left us with some semblance of city services in tact and saved our bacon year after year in this horrible budget crisis. Naturally we can't have someone like that running the city. They'll probably hire another unqualified buidling inspector from a small northwestern town.

May you all apply for another job outside of Sacramento when the residents of your districts decide you are no longer needed.

More from a dysfunctional City Council. If Block A likes an idea, Block B doesn't...irrespective of the merits. We teach our kids critical thinking so they can grow up to be functioning adults...too bad we don't elect them councilmembers.
