Raley's heir Michael Teel and partners will open a new cafe, wine bar and market called Good Eats in East Sacramento Monday.

Similar to Selland's Market-Café and Corti Brothers, which operate on other end of East Sacramento, the kitchen will offer hot and cold takeout foods, wine and coffee. The specialty grocery will include wine, butchered meats, seafood, cheeses, bakery items and flowers.

On Thursday, Good Eats official Julie Rollofson led food and wine tastings to prepare for a soft opening set for 6 a.m. Monday. The opening follows a lengthy renovation of what used to be Andiamo restaurant and the Rosemont Grill at 3145 Folsom Blvd., near Alhambra Boulevard.

The establishment promises to be the flagship store for the Good Eats company founded by Teel and venture capitalist Michael Ashker, who partnered previously to run Prosper Media in Midtown. Ashker also founded Internet companies Healthaxis and Courtlink.

Teel — grandson of Raley's founder and son of its owner, Joyce Raley Teel — was named president and chief executive officer of the West Sacramento-based Raley's grocery chain last January after an eight-year absence. He'd also served as Raley's CEO between 1996 and 2002.

Teel's original plan to open his first Good Eats specialty market at 5810 Folsom Blvd. — a retail space long occupied by Corti Brothers — in 2008 met with stiff opposition from locals because it would have forced the Italian gourmet shop to move. Teel canceled those plans and opened several Good Eats markets in Arizona.

Good Eats was previously scheduled to open last December. The building's brick and brown adobe-style exterior is accented with an outdoor terrace, new landscaping and trellis work.

The official opening will be held in September. Hours are expected to be 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturdays and 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sundays, said Rollofson, also Teel's fiancée.

Is this the guy who tried to oust Corti Bros from where they were located, hell I was born in East Sacramento and I know he pissed off a lot of people. I wish him the worst.

Michael Teel did not "oust" anyone or even try to oust anyone. As cogmeyer states below, it was Darrell Corti who did not have a lease (actually, he had one, but it was month-to-month, instead of long-term). So, Michael Teel came along with a better offer -- that's how the business cookie crumbles.

And to this day I do not understand why Sacramentans have it out for Michael Teel. And yet they worship Darrell Corti, who, as we can plainly see, runs a dump of a store. Good food, yes; but a store in bad need of redecorating. And how about longer hours, so I can stop by after work and not have to race to get there by 7; and maybe an indoor seating area, so I can eat my sandwich there on Saturday? Or a coffee bar?

I wish it had been Good Eats in place of Corti Bros., because we would not have had to wait so long for Good Eats, and, judging from what Teel did to the former Andiamo site, a Good Eats in the Corti Bros. site would have been a BIG step up from Corti Bros. in terms of a spruced up look and amenities.

Only now is Corti Bros. (or the landlord) fixing up the outside of the building. Today I saw a new seating area outside, which made me laugh on a 100-plus-degree day. Already i see that Good Eats will be open later than Corti Bros. -- so I say WELCOME GOOD EATS.

I'll stick with Corti's as well. It's supposed to be a grocery store. What counts is on the inside.

Seems to me that by not bothering to renew his lease, Darrell Corti put himself in position to be ousted. I don't think the Good Eats team is the evil party here.. in fact we are lucky the Corti location didnt get grabbed up by a payday loan office or a pawnshop or something worse.

If I am a landlord and the owner of a very well established business is okay just paying rent on a month to month basis, I would have to conclude that the business is thinking about closing or moving, and I would be entertaining other offers too.

Corti Bros has done nothing to improve the looks of the building. There is plenty of room for all so get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait for Good Eats and have been driving by on my way home from work waiting for the grand openning... I am impressed with what I have been reading so far.

To the Editor: There is a link in this story to a January joke of an article by Jack Nordby: Is It Good Bye to Good Eats? You may want to trash that one. First of all, if the author cannot even spell Peet's correctly, what else did he have wrong? The story is nothing more than a personal attack on Mike Teel and even his fiancee (even going so far as to suggest Teel had told his fiancée that she was the Good Eats CEO simply “to make her feel important and so he could get some.” So he could "get some"?Come on, Sacramento Press, you are better than that. And, for those wondering, I do not know Michael Teel or his fiancée, have never met them. But I will be patronizing their new store.

Thanks for keeping such a close eye on our site. We've unlinked this story to the article written by Jack Nordby after deciding it was not an appropriate reference to include.

We're lucky to have users like you that bring these things to our attention!

Good of you to unlink the link, but why not delete the Nordby piece altogether? It is worthless -- and it makes me question whether I should continue reading the Sacramento Press, if for no other reason than you allowed someone to use the phrase "get some." It is sexist, it is dehumanizing, and, in the end, adds nothing to Nordby's "article."
