I think it's really cool that they are focusing on pedestrians as well. Safety for bicyclists and pedestrians goes hand and hand and spending money on the improvement of our streets and sidewalks is money well-spent!

Sounds like a great idea. I just got nailed by a car on my bike over by J and 22nd. I was following the law and the driver just didn't expect to hit me. My '79 Team Fuji road bike was thrashed and my foot smashed. It healed but there was still the matter of reimbursement. After pursuing an uncooperative driver to no avail I called Sac Area Bicycle Advocates and they suggested I contact a lawyer and gave a recommendation.
At any rate, Making streets friendly to cyclists and walkers can be done. Best Life, a men's magazine, just had an article on simple ways to do such a thing. It also covers the benefits of doing so, they cover everything from improved health and thus lower healthcare costs to increases in shopping and jobs.

The city must finish the job of lighting the grid - Midtown and downtown still have huge swaths of very dark streets. P & Q must be returned to two-way like N Street 19th and 21st Street (south of Broadway). More bike lanes and better pedestrian access for sure. Taking P Street from three lanes to two and adding bike lanes was a huge improvement and I Street could totally benefit from the same redo. There is still so much more to do.
