Downtown & Vine opens upscale tasting room on K Street

The location is ideal. Directly across from the IMAX theater, near major hotels and just blocks from the Capitol and Convention Center, Downtown & Vine is hoping to capitalize on the area’s diverse populace.

The upscale urban wine tasting room – located at 1200 K Street – opened its doors Friday afternoon after months of preparation. Its owners, Gregg Lamer and Kate Chomco, are both wine educators with hospitality backgrounds and are hoping to bolster the Sacramento area wine scene.

Chomco lives in Napa while Lamer resides in Amador, so Sacramento was a natural half-way point to open a business.

"We love the wine industry," Chomco said. "And this is the center of the wine region in California."

On this past wet and rainy Friday afternoon, servers at Downtown & Vine trickled in for what they hoped would be a busy day. The young men and women knew their products – they’d gone wine tasting at each featured winery – and were ready to get pouring.

The business is offering 2-ounce tastes, 5-ounce glasses or wine flights (three 2-ounce tastes) of wine from wineries in Napa, Amador, El Dorado and Sonoma counties. It also has small snacks (nosh) and plates of food, with cheeses from the Cowgirl Creamery.

The featured wineries are:

Sonoma – Iron Horse, DeLoach Vineyards, Buena Vista Winery
Napa – Michael Mondavi Family, Neyers Vineyards, Round Pond Estate
Amador – Fiddletown Cellars, Dillian Wines, Vino Noceto Winery
El Dorado – Shadow Ranch

Nope, just your wallet. I haven’t been but from peeking inside during the last bit of construction, they seem to have done a great job. Might be a nice aperitif for dinner at Mayahuel.
